Pretentious Diet

Our Weekend Memoirs: Dieting on Eggs
Please scroll down for Sunday Stealing

The chinese guy selling noodles in front of 7 Eleven also sells eggs. I wanted to buy some but he was busy with his customers and I couldn't wait. Back in front of the pc, a recent report that Margaret Thatcher's pre-election victory diet included 28 eggs a week had me reading more than I normally would big news. She is said to have told an interviewer that she had "no special dieting regime." Her pocket diary, which was released by the Margaret Thatcher Archive Trust seems to have revealed otherwise. But don't we all sometimes like to keep others wondering?

The Iron Lady's husband though gives it to us straight and cool. When asked "who wears the pants in this house?" He replied, "I do. And I also iron them." This anecdote is exactly what I thought of while my southeast asian ass err... blood was quivering in the London cold as I stood on this famous street.

Then Mr Savior-of-the-Monarchy (according to wife Cherie on Queen) Tony Blair was the resident this armed guy was ready to rock for. I reckon this security is not Barney's play pretend. Now on to the only begotten egg left in my fridge. I fried it for Cj and me while writing this post and now we have to endure burnt egg white. I've run out of sugar as well. But not to worry I'll conjure fructose into my coffee. My wok magicked the yolk into staying soft. It won't be an entirely bitter breakfast after all. Happy Sunday, friends!

Sunday Stealing: The Pretentious Blogging Meme
Please scroll up for Our Weekend Memoirs

Today we ripped this meme off a blogger known as Little Bark from the blog The Tree Unleashed. She explains that she found it over at The Tree of Life. It appears it originated on that blog. So, of course, that will be as far as we go. Tracing back our theft's thieves might take some time. Link back to us at Sunday Stealing!

Cheers to all of us thieves!

1. How long have you been blogging? a year tomorrow

2. What made you start? it's more affordable, more therapeutic than other hobbies; and I can do it sitting on a 125-baht chair; or if I were pretending: a pathological need for attention. Rita Skeeter said that. Real neurotics will never own up to their 'eyes swimming with the ghost of their past'

3. Who inspired you? other bloggers

4. About how many hours a week would you estimate you spend on your blog? at first about 3-4 hours a day. multiply that by 7 and that's how addicted I was. But like common observation blogging is therapeutic so the product you have on your mathematical mind has been lessened as the days wore on

5. What kind of experience or background do you have with writing? those composition attempts in 4th grade

6. Talk about how you come up with blog topics. Where do you get your ideas? I look no further than the memes

7. What or who inspires you and your blog? the discovery that some bloggers are more neurotic than I am. Actually I thought of saying me, myself and I but I'm not sure how JK Rowling would take repeat quoting offenders

8. Where and/or how do [sic] your brainstorming for your blog? I brainstorm in my daydreams

9. Do you have any blogging rules or guidelines you follow? that I try to learn something from what I read

10. Is there anything you will not blog about? none if I got no other life to bother myself about

11. Do you have any sort of a publishing schedule in terms of day of week or topic? I publish according to my bio-rhythm

Purple Pack Rat

Friday's Fave Five: Pack Rat
Please scroll down for Friday Photo Flashback

Time piece

I woke up on Wednesday morning to find my alarm clock registering 8.10 a.m. "Since I'm already late," I acknowledged the verdict as I yawned my way to the shower, "I might as well prepare Cj's breakfast and eat with him before I go." When I arrived in the computer room at work, I got a happy surprise: the time was 7.55, not 8.55. Yes! I wasn't late after all. My clock has served me quite well for more than 7 years, and even in its old and malfunctioning age has done so to my advantage. This must be why sometimes I am a pack rat.

Restaurants

With Mommyhood, a full-time job and work on PhD applications going full-blast, whatever little time I have left for cooking is all wiped out and I raise my hands up in surrender. I am thankful that restaurants are readily available which means Cj and I do not go hungry. We've been having dinners out the entire week and I'm grateful that the menu at our choice japanese restaurant is balanced and nourishes us just fine.

Hongkong & Macau flights confirmed and paid

That's a big chunk off my to-do list. CJ and I send our thank-you hugs to super duper Uncle Nuj for booking our trip online.

Lovely chat with C
It started off with champagne at the cruise we're going to do in Hongkong and ended with best wishes on each other's future plans. We dreamed. Who knows what we old maids invent in our fiercely stubborn little heads when we chat? When it happens, I'll be happy to share it with friends.

Related research

In the course of scouring journal and research databases, I discovered that major variables of my former professors' recent research are not too far from what I have been putting so much time on. I am feeling the highs.

Friday Photo Flashback: Purple
Please scroll up for Friday's Fave Five

Purple is my favorite color. This must be one reason why I quickly wandered into this part of a not so secret garden. I was a newly-wed when I toured the north of Thailand 8 years ago. This is the Princess Mother's garden in Chiangmai. I loved it there. With beauty all around and a temperature below 28C all I need is a mug of coffee with a Jane Austen classic and I could spend a good few hours either admiring or despising Mrs Bennet's matchmaking skills.

Have you seen a Mpafako?

Conrad Kottak's international edition of Anthropology: the exploration of human diversity is my bible this week. Here's part of the glossary. The 13th item on the list is mentioned on the author's account of his study on the economy and social life of the Betsileo people in Madagascar.

1. adapids early (Eocene) primate family ancestral to lemurs and lorises

2. advocacy view the belief that precisely because anthropologists are experts on human problems and social change, and because they study, understand, and respect cultural views, they should make policy affecting people

3. affinals relatives by marriage, whether of lineals (e.g., son's wife) or collaterals (e.g., sister's husband)

4. agnates members of the same patrilineal descent group

5. ahimsa Hindu doctrine that prohibits harming life, and thus cattle slaughter

6. allele a biochemical difference involving a particular gene

7. Allen's rule Rule stating that the relative parts of protruding body parts (such as ears, tails, bills, fingers, toes and limbs) tend to increase in warmer climates

8. anatomically modern humans (AMHs) including the Cro Magnons of Europe and the older fossils of Skhul and Qafzeh; continue through the present

9. apical ancestor in a descent group, the individual who stands at the apex, or top of the common genealogy

10. Anthropoidea one of two suborders of primates; includes monkeys, apes and humans

11. arboreal theory Theory that the primates evolved by adapting to life high up in the trees, where visual abilities would have been favored over the sense of smell, and grasping hands and feet would have been used for movement along branches

12. archaic state nonidustrial state

13. mpakafo the Malagasy vampire

3 Minutes and Another Brick

Musical Monday: Another Brick in the Wall
Please scroll down for Monday Mayhem

Six periods. It is what my timetable says I am supposed to be dealing with today. But I did only two. Thanks to the power cut we have the rest of the day free and it's only lunchtime. Yohoh! At a quarter to 12 everyone was taking off. The parking lot was excitedly busy. Both students and faculty were in high spirits. As I made my way out of the huge gate I also found myself grinning at some students. They cast me questioning looks so I let them in, "Well, people, during times like these, teachers are probably actually happier than you lot." Pink Floyd's Another Brick in the Wall may not absolutely reflect the culture of my workplace, but it's what rocked in my head today.

Banter and Negativity

Our Weekend Memoirs: Facebook Banter
Please scroll down for Sunday Stealing

Yesterday a caption I put under a shared photo on Facebook generated banter. These photos will have to be cropped because these girls must still be sleeping, (it's Sunday morning here); and I haven't asked permission to flash their beauty on my blog today. Tagging got one worried she might eat sermon for a drink she held in her hand. She said she was only "modelling for 100 Pipers" on new year's eve.

Alrighty, that's I in red, claiming 'Good girls drink mineral water'

which is valid, don't you think? Or I was too drunk yesterday with Austen:

Mothering and a New Favorite

Friday's Fave Five: Getting Settled with Mothering
Please scroll down for Mommy Moments

This week flew by very fast! I mean this fast that I noticed it then I couldn't believe it. Yet it was a TGIF greeting for a co-teacher in the lift this morning. It's perhaps because from Monday to Thursday I was like laundry in a washing machine whirling, soaping, rinsing and finally spinning myself to a blessed Friday while snatching faves along the way:

i. a write-up finally taking shape
It still needs polishing but there it is - 800+ words already and covering almost all points necessary for submission. I strongly suppose Ceejay's full-time stay with me has much to do with its near completion status for I am

ii. getting settled with mothering
Although having to look after Ceejay without a caregiver now (the ex terminated her services) terrified me at first, I am thankful that my struggling efforts to try anyway are turning out okay. I'm sleeping with a baseball bat and there are dinosaurs on the margins of my conference paper; and why is my bathrobe belt now tied to the strap of my purse...? Boys! It helped to have conditioned my mind to be amused, not stressed by all this.

iii. a flower-bordered way
Everyday during lunch break when I rush back to the apartment to check on Cj I have these bougainvillas and hanging purple orchids to look at. This nature display makes for a cheery walk, and a song Mama and her friends used to sing in church long time ago comes alive in my mind, "...in the cool of the day He talks with me, in the rose-bordered way He walks with me...." Somehow it is comforting to me.

iv. Lang and Wise mugs
Things come and go. As I looked into drawers to find replacements of coffee cups that were broken last week, I found my mugs. They depict original paintings; one by Sherri Buck Baldwin called The Herb Wagon and the other by Lowell Herrero called A Family of Felines. Admiring the rustic charm on them was all I did when I was married. They're too beautiful amidst many things that didn't appeal to me. They symbolize what I really want in the long run and I didn't want them used with anything that was the opposite of my dreams and wishes. Now it feels awesome to finally be reunited with a reminder of what makes me happy.

v. our loot from the Filipino store
Being imported, they're naturally expensive but I had a blast shopping! It's wonderful, just wonderful to eat foods from home. Cj loves the cheese spread, Del Monte mango juice and ketchup. I love the entire loot!

Mommy Moments: New Favorite
Please scroll up for Friday's Fave Five

Now that Ceejay stays with me full-time, I get to understand his new favorites more clearly. Usually after reviewing and then buying CDs and DVDs I present them to him and just let him choose what he wants to watch and we take it from there. I'm happy he likes Greatest Heroes and Legends of the Bible. He loves the blowing of horns in Joshua and the Battle of Jericho. I watch it too when I'm not nostril-deep in work.

He also loves Bugsy and the raining gum balls from Walt Disney Bedtime Stories:

When I'm preparing his food he loves to 'help.' His new favorite in the kitchen is his new discovery: the knife. His curiosity scares me as he also loves to jump up and down while exploring it. The other day I sliced tomatoes in the bathroom, hid the knife in the tissue box and gave him a plastic alternative from his 4th birthday. The knee situation is from last week when he dived into rough concrete.

When he gets bored with other things he mimics his Baby Einstein art DVD and transforms these into many different shapes over and over:

He tried and liked the mango juice when we were off to a resort town for the new year. We shopped at the Filipino store and Del Monte mango juice is now his new favorite drink: (ouch! imported cans are pricey, Ceej!)

Next week, next month or the next minute we wonder what will our kids be up to. Let's brace ourselves for that.

The Herb Wagon

Whilst strolling the grounds of St Mary' s church in Scarborough, I was humming "parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme..." All I saw though was Anne Bronte's grave in the shadow of Scarborough Castle. Of course Scarborough Fair ended in 1788. Showing up in 2006 was rather late. I didn't get the T-shirt but I got the mug from which I sipped coffee yesterday in the faculty lounge. With Sherri Buck Baldwin's lovely painting on it, moccona has never tasted better.

Either you are like me - curious at what's on a painting or fond of herbs for whatever purpose, 'tis sweet of the manufacturer to have contents of the Herb Wagon written in gothic-like font around the mug: (I collect mugs)

1. Lavender, Angelica
2. Lemon Verbena, Ginger Mint
3. Tarragon, Bee Balm
4. Fennel, Lovage
5. Meadowsweet, Chervil
6. Star Anise, Artemisa
7. Marjoram, Chicory
8. Oregano, Sage, Thyme
9. Dill, Saffron, Bay Leaf
10. Sweet Basil, Coriander, Cilantro
11. Parsley, Chives, Garlic
12. Savory, Sweet Cicely, Rosemary
13. Yarrow, Catmint, Sweet Woodruff

Meet Me Halfway Scenarios

Musical Monday: Meet Me Halfway
Please scroll down for Monday Mayhem

'You' in many love songs usually refers to a person, doesn't it? To me it doesn't. At least this time. It's not just emotions I'm putting on the line these days. It's something more. A new beginning of another life is what I'm putting my attention on. Another life? Did I just say that? Indeed I did. Meet Me Halfway meets the lyrical criteria of what moves me to meet a goal across the sky. And nobody sings it like Kenny Loggins.

Title: Meet Me Half Way
Artist: Kenny Loggins
Lyrics by
lyrics007

In a lifetime, made of memories
I believe in destiny

Every moment returns again in time
When I've got the future on my mind
Know that you'll be the only one

Meet me halfway across the sky
Out where the world belongs
to only you and I

Meet me halfway across the sky
Make this a new beginning of another life.

In a lifetime there is only love
Reaching for the lonely one

We are stronger when we are given love
When we put emotions on the line
Know that we are the timeless ones

Meet me halfway across the sky
Out where the world belongs
to only you and I

Meet me halfway across the sky
Make this a new beginning of another life.

Meet me halfway across the sky
Out where the world belongs
to only you and I

Meet me halfway across the sky
Make this a new beginning of another life.

Monday Mayhem: Scenario Meme
Please scroll up for Musical Monday

1. You see a strange car pull up to your neighbor's house every day at lunch time. You accidental glance into the window of the house and notice that your 'happily married neighbor' is fooling around! What do you do?

Stay away. It's none of my business.

2. You are at the mall and a mom with really annoying screaming little kids is walking in front of you. She goes to give her kids a quarter for the giant gum ball machine and she accidentally drops a $10 bill and doesn't realize it. What do you do?

Tell her. Besides the fact that it's not yours, a $10 bill is not compensation for annoying kids. Now I am lecturing, lol!

3. You get an email from a candy company telling you that they will send you 6 pounds of delicious chocolate if you blog about their product. When you get the product and try it you realize that it is the worst chocolate that you have ever tasted. What do you do?

I won't blog positively about a product unless I 'eat' what I preach.

4. Texting while driving is one of the most dangerous and annoying things someone could do. Yet, what would you do if you were driving and listening to the radio when the announcer says that he will give $10,000 to the first person with your name that texts a message to him?

Nice try. But my life is worth much more than $10,000.00.

5. You've been invited to your boss's house for a dinner party. It's dark out and there is poor lighting when you get there. As soon as you get inside you realize that you have stepped in dog poop and you have tracked into your boss's house. What do you do?

Clean it up.

6. You are at a restaurant waiting for your food to arrive. You've waited nearly 30 minutes since the moment you placed your order when your food finally shows up. There is a hair on the top of the food. Do you send it back and wait another 30 minutes or do you deal?

If I'm not hungry - send it back. If I am hungry, I'll proceed to the nearest fast food.

7. If you had the power to do so, what would be the one question that you would like to ask anyone who reads this?

What kind of boss would have poor lighting and dog poop outside his house?

A Concert and a Trivia

Our Weekend Memoirs: Dionne Warwick Live in Bangkok
Please scroll down for Sunday Stealing

Sorting a visa problem doesn't have to be guantanamosh. The Thai Immigration Department gave me 7 days before they granted me a longer 365. I used the leeway making sure I didn't end up prosecuted as that's how the threat was stamped on my passport. So while our liaison officer was meeting lawyers, I was revelling in my Sunday night dreams with a hit maker.

One of the main things I bought the ticket for was a good video of a Warwick song that disappeared on youtube - I'll Never Love this Way Again. It felt good to finally hear it live and see the legend herself.

Bangkokians dispersing

was brilliantly performed. David Elliott Warwick did a great job singing for Stevie Wonder and Elton John's parts with his famous mom.

Chette and I lingered for awhile in this area after the concert

Newborn Days and Foggy Mornings

Friday's Fave Five: Foggy Mornings
(Please scroll down for Mommy Moments)

Refund. The business office refunded my visa problem expenses. I had to pay the fine but they took care of everything else which was a pleasant surprise as I didn't expect them to and I already conditioned my mind to face a few deprivations. A colleague who is privy to the vice president told me, "They refunded you because they need you." I don't know whether I should believe it. Foreign employees are sometimes treated like necessary evil around here. But well, it's the refund that's the fave.

Foggy mornings. I counted two early mornings of fog. I could not see buildings 2 minute-walk away. The illusion of cold made me smile.

Bible Heroes, Ceejay's new DVD interest. He never wanted to watch it when he was 3. I'm glad he's back to christian stuff. For now it's goodbye, Buddhism.

Phone conversation with Mama. Mozart's (on left side bar below Ceejay) christmas treats were delayed because the ATM would not release cash. The situation dragged on until the other day. Mama said Mozart was already sulking. When I had it sorted, the bank computers said an incorrect PIN was entered 3x. Mama had to admit she pressed the wrong numbers after insisting she didn't. I teased her that someone was worse than I when it comes to forgetfulness. The conversation lightened up even more when I asked her what's the sound in her background and she explained that she was at Mrs G's attending a party. "Oh... say hello to my MIL that never was," I mused and it was her turn to tease me. We ended up laughing like silly girls.

Mrs Flowers. The box says Thailand's 1st sugar-free, premium chocolate. Maltitol is used. Yum.

Mommy Moments: Newborn Days
(Please scroll up for Friday's Fave Five)
Ceejay was born on a Sunday. I went shopping on Thursday that same week. I had so many unanswered questions about mothering that I just had to get out to see if the world was still right. The answers I relied on were only those by Dr Spock in written form and from overseas calls to my mother in PI. Then there were those unread gradschool books that I had to stare at before classes resumed the next week. It was a bit chaotic.

But I have to admit those days were fun and exciting, and I wouldn't exchange the experience for the world! We had breastfeeding issues and Ceejay had to be bottlefed. A few days from the hospital I had these moments with Ceejay where I thought of printing lip marks all over his face before giving him a bath. I used my phone to capture the lipstick job which was erased as he moved too much.

In the arms of his Dad...

and with me a few more days later. Is it obvious that a few minutes before this shot was taken I had a little accident in the garage? It happens when you gallivant through hammers and wheels in high heels. But there were sleepless nights to brace myself for so I had to regain the poise at once.
