This post is linked with: Booking Through, Thursday 13

"My brother-in-law turns 50 this weekend. So, in his honor, please pick up your nearest book or whatever book you’re currently reading, and turn to page 50 and then share the first 50 words with the rest of us."

From Timeline by Michael Crichton:

Only the Professor's personal intervention prevented him from being expelled from Yale. Chris's response to this sudden jeopardy was to bury himself in his studies; his grades swiftly improved; he eventually graduated fifth in his class. But in the process he became conservative. Now, at twenty-four he tended toward fussiness and stomach trouble. He was only reckless with women.

Thursday 13: Books that readers did not finish reading. Book Riot on FB asked fans what books they broke up with and these are 13 out of more than 200 responses.

Other answers were Little Women, The Devil Wears Prada, Water for Elephants, Hunger Games, The Book Thief, Poisonwood Bible, and even Pride and Prejudice. But clearly people's preferences differ of course. What book did you not finish reading?

  1. Now I wonder, why was he reckless with women? :)

    My BTT response is HERE.

  2. Fascinating excerpt! Thanks for sharing...and here's MY BTT POST

  3. I haven't read this book before but I enjoyed the movie version. I really should read the book though, I bet it's awesome.

    My BTT

    1. It is. I'm enjoying it but wishing I could watch the movie.

  4. Sounds interesting.

  5. I have actually finished five of the books listed (though I did not like one), and have attempted to read two others I thought I would like and just couldn't get into.

From pg 50 of "Shell Game" by Ridley Pearson:

"Those inside the Base were isolated and expected an assault. Fireballs were thrown at security guards and Cast Members who dared enter the area. Laser light cages appeared, trapping the innocent. Perfectly healthy people grew dizzy and fainted—the result of spells, no doubt. A young person was made to look old."

(Actually 52 words, and probably doesn't make sense unless you've read the Kingdom Keepers series.)

    My T13: Teacher Appreciation

  6. Oh wow, I actually finished reading a number of books on that list and loved at least a couple of them. Of course, everybody has different tastes in books, so I am not surprised that some people couldn't stomach finishing them! As for your BTT, I've read some of Michael Crichton's work but not Timeline. I also did the BTT for today after a long hiatus, and if you want, you can check out my 50+ words over at my blog: Ophelia's Little Corner. Have a great weekend! :)

  7. I finished Eat, Pray, Love and it didn't even kill me. Once I got 30 pages or so, in I was in the clear. Couldn't do Da Vinci Code. I'm not sure I got very far in. I often quit books. If I'm not getting it, sometimes persistence doesn't pay off. better to move on with what does.
